Exclamation Blue Ox tow bar cracked at 65mpg!

DW and I were cruising down I-95 in scenic Bowman, SC on Saturday morning going to the Florida Keys. In between rain storms, I suddenly saw the towed Jeep headlight in my side view mirror! Not where the Jeep is supposed to be.

Next I looked in my rear view camera and saw the Jeep was being held on by only one bar of my Blue Ox Aladdin tow bar. This is all going on while driving about 65mph on a very crowded I-95. I carefully hit the brakes, slowed down and pulled to the very narrow shoulder. The Jeep bumped the remaining tow bar as the coach slowed down but held as I stopped.

I managed to unhook the Jeep and DW drove behind me to the next exit. We tried to call CW but they don't stock Blue Ox. We called some Blue Ox dealers that we found on line but the only one with an Aladdin in stock was in Jacksonville, FL - about 4 hours away and DW did not relish driving the Jeep in the pouring rain all that way. One of the Blue Ox dealers suggested we call Uhaul - something we had not considered. Uhaul found a car trailer in Brunswick, GA that we reserved but it was still 2.5 hours away.

In the meantime, I called Blue Ox's 24 hours hotline and they called back in about 15 minutes. They did not provide any options for an immediate fix but wanted me to call back on Monday so that they could ship me a new arm.

Made it to Brunswick, GA by 4pm and picked up the car hauler. Made it down to the Florida Keys with no further issues. Uhaul did not have hitches so had to run to Advance Auto to buy one. I usually carry a hitch with me, but for some reason, I left it at home this time.

Spoke to Jeremy at Blue Ox on Monday and he was very helpful. They are shipping me a brand new Aladdin tow bar to the campground where I'm staying. They want me to send the old one back for them to examine.

I've towed my Jeep close to 50k miles with this tow bar with no issues. I hope that Blue Ox figures out what the problem was.

Wow. Thanks for posting all that. Glad to hear Blue Ox is behind you with a new one. In the few other cases I've heard of , they did the same. Glad you're ok.

Yes, thanks for posting and please keep us up to date on how this is handled by Blue Ox. I've used Blue Ox for many years and still do. So glad this didn't lead to a disaster!

Wow! That could of really led to something disastrous! I'm glad everything turned out ok, or at least no major damage. I hope you enjoy the Keys. Making our annual trip down to Big Pine Key in June.

What and experience, glad it worked out fairly well. What is the weight rating of your tow bar, and is Blue Ox offering to pay for the rental trailer? Keep us posted regarding the findings concerning the broken tow bar.

Since the tow bar was purchased in 2008, I did not bug them about the trailer rental (about $300) as they are 'extending' the normal warranty time.

They emailed me the tracking number and new tow bar should arrive on Thursday. When purchased, my bar was rated for 5000 lbs. One dealer told me that the current model is rated for 7500 lbs.

Not the first Blue Ox I've seen break although the last one was at the pivot point and not the arm.

I purchased a new tow bar a couple of months ago, I got the highest weight rating I could find a Demco rated at 10,000 pounds. This is more than twice the vehicle weight I tow a Jeep Wrangler Unlimited, I got the heavier than needed tow bar mainly for peace of mind, your story makes me glad I got and extremely heavy duty tow bar.

Before I used Blue Ox again I would check the internet and see how many have failed. I did a quick search and I'm glad that I have a Ready Brute.

With all due respect,........I believe I would send the complete Tow bar back. If one side is fatigued then probably both are. It could have been just a bad pour in the factory that made the blanks for Blue Ox. There are a lot of things that are done "out of house" with company's. I'm not on their side but I do understand manufacturing. I'd feel better with a new towbar rather than a half new. Just my opinion

I agree with Muffin in that the entire tow bar should be evaluated by Blue-Ox for safety and integrity.

I have the Blue Ox Aventa 10,000 lb. It doesn't matter what size car I tow, I believe that I am well covered for anything except a Tank.

Most of the time my 2006 Saturn Vue is inside my cargo trailer but there are times when I just tow my car and that's when I dig out the Aventa tow bar.

Two questions. Did you purchase the towbar new or used? Did you ever back up with your toad attached to the coach?

I doubt the part is all aluminum.
I expect it is aluminum mixed with an alloy to give added strength.

I would be happy to have my lab look at the failure and determine the cause before you send it back to Blue Ox if you want or need and independent assessment of the cause.

My failure analysis engineers are in my Cincinnati, Ohio facility. I do have a metallurgical facility closer to you in Richburg, SC but they do not have all the necessary equipment to provide failure analysis. It would a less conclusive review by a metallurgist.

My Cincinnati facility also has x-ray capabilities if needed.

    To summarize for all:

    1. Blue Ox IS sending me a whole new Aladdin at no charge.
    2. For the $300-400 its going to cost me, I'm NOT going to 'lawyer up'.
    3. I bought the Aladdin new on May 8, 2008 from Tom Schaeffers in Shoemakersville, PA. They also installed the base plates on my Town & Country and my Jeep.
    4. I NEVER backed up with the Aladdin hooked up. The few times I was stuck, I unhooked the toad.
    5. I appreciate the offer for the metallurgy analysis but I'll send it back to Blue Ox as they requested.

According to Fedex, the Aladdin is in Big Pine key on a truck for delivery today.

RVThere, I respect you for your decision and not blowing it out of proportion. There are bound to be a failure once in a while in any company. This shows there is a tremendous strain on all the points between the coach and car. A friend and I were talking about this a month or so ago. Towing a vehicle is not the same dynamics as towing a trailer. The trailer must follow but the vehicle must be steered down the highway. Lots of side to side pressures in play here. I've seen some scarey stuff come and go in a campground and I'm sure others have also.
I thank you for sharing your experiences with all of us. I have already checked my equipment closer than I probably ever have and I owe this to you. Thanks again
