Pontoon Boat Causes Crash, Sends 7 To Hospital

UPDATED: 4:03 am EDT April 10, 2012 Two families were hospitalized Monday afternoon, after a pontoon boat fell off a boat trailer on East Fort Macon Road.Once the pontoon fell onto the pavement, two minivans carrying young children crashed into the boat."I saw a woman running across the grass with one son who was bleeding," said eyewitness Alma Cutler. "So I went and got one of the children and kept her the whole time, until the rescuers got there."A young girl who authorities believe to be around 10 or 11 years old was unresponsive when EMT crews arrived. The child was airlifted by an EastCare chopper and taken to Carteret General Hospital.The boat's gas tank fell off when the boat hit the ground, spilling fuel into the street. Atlantic Beach firefighters covered the gasoline with foam, in order to prevent the fuel from igniting.The accident happened shortly before 3 p.m. at the intersection of Henderson Boulevard and East Fort Macon Road.Residents who rushed to help the crash victims said some of the children were bleeding, and in shock.Eyewitnesses who spoke to the people involved in the crash said one of the two families was from New York visiting on spring break.Morehead City, Pine Knoll Shores and Indian Beach Fire Departments also assisted in the response effort.
